seven

Seven.

Seven, seven, seven, seven.

I thought maybe if I kept saying it, it might start to feel a little less strange.  A little less like we are half way to the teens.  A little less like we are beyond all things baby girl.

Nope.

No matter how many times I write it, say it, hear her little lady voice exclaim it, seven sounds like seven.

She's lost all baby fat (except for the cheeks that I hope never go), there are adult teeth in her mouth, and by golly she's almost as long as I am.  She likes to talk on the phone and reads to me now.  She has friends and sleepovers and loves to dance.

It's been a big year for her.

I know that we all say this at every birthday, but she changed so much between 6 and 7.  She's such a sweet girl.  Always eager to lend a helping hand.  She started writing me little love notes that leaves on my nightstand.  Her tiny words on tiny paper tell me that she has these big thoughts and feelings and she can express them.  Very cool.  Very scary.

She loves crafts.

No, like, she loves crafts.  In the past year we have gone through forests of construction paper and more glue bottles then I can count.  She constructs couches and beds and table runners for every holiday.  They cover the floor of her room and fill her heart with pride.

She's beautiful.

Really, really beautiful.  Outwardly it's obvious, but inwardly it's just as loud.  She loves her friends and family and wants to make other people happy.

And she's our baby.

Even if she is,

Seven.

Happy Birthday Josie Kathryn.
You make us so happy.

four

My little baby boy is four.

Three was a big year for Gabe.

It seems like he spent the last 365 days changing from a toddler to a little boy.  He has personality for days and charms my socks off on a daily basis.  He is a stinker and can drive us up the wall, but my oh my, do we love this little boy.

Gabe is such a lover.  Quick to offer kisses and hugs, always wanting to be where we are.

We sit here and look at him and can't believe he is ours.  That he's here.  Alive and happy and so full of joy.

This year will be another big year.

We are getting ready for his third open heart surgery and to be totally honest, we are all a little scared.  But when I look into those dark brown, twinkly eyes and feel his chubby hands squeeze mine, I know that he's going to do awesome.

And after he recovers, we get to start a whole new adventure.  One where Gabe can run and jump and grow.

Today, we celebrate you Gabe.

You are a light that shines bright.  I'm so glad you're mine.

14 Months

How's that for a Blogging Break?!?!

24 hours counts right???

Little Gabey put his 14th month under his belt while we were on vacation.

That marks 10 months in the Pope House.

He's at that weird age where he wants so badly to be independent but just can't manage the skills it takes quite yet.

He is still a crawler.  He's made huge progress with walking while holding our hands or pushing something heavy but no steps on his own yet.  He did just start cruising this past week so I'm sure he will be running me ragged in no time!

Little Man popped in 4 more teeth this past month too.  I've always loved his smile, but that gap toothed grin makes me melt even more!

He's also putting those teeth to work gnawing away on our arms and legs and doing the dreaded teeth grinding to get a rise out of me.  It's brutal!

He seems to be on a pretty great schedule.  He gets up around 8:30, eats, plays for about an hour, then goes down for a short nap.  After some more play time and lunch he goes down at the same time as Josie for an afternoon nap then hangs out until dinner.  Bedtime is around 7:30 and he sleeps through the night no problems.

Those scrumptious neck and leg rolls are still hanging around, but his little face is slimming out.

His eyes are the deepest brown I've ever seen.

He's sporting 12-18 month clothes with lots of room to grow into them and a size 3 diaper.

While he can be kinda ornery when he's out longer then he wants to be, he's usually a very laid back kid.

His favorite toys?

Spoons (Darlene bought him these from IKEA and he seriously has one in his hands at ALL times!)

balls, and anything Josie is playing with.  Which makes for some sibling rivalry a little earlier then I was expecting it.  She's learned to play up on the couch where he can't reach if she wants any privacy!

He continues to be completely oblivious to the uncertainties in his life.

Which is exactly how it should be.

And while I wanted to share all of that with you, my real reason for taking a break from my Blogging Break was to give you a quick update on his case.

I've been trying to hunt down this child's social security number for over a month now.

Yesterday I made my daily call to try to track it down and ended up with some great news.

Gabe's birth mom tested positive for alcohol.  Which is a HUGE violation of her case plan.

I feel awful being excited about that, but it means big things for us.

She is also living with a woman who just recently had her children taken by the state and the judge told her that Gabe would not be returned if she didn't find different housing arrangements.

Apparently when the case worker asked if she had started looking for a new place to live she replied that this was her trailer and the other lady will have to move.

But the other lady claims it's her trailer and she will not move.

AND she hasn't turned in any proof of income or verification that she is even on the lease of the trailer that she is claiming is hers.

PLUS she is still smoking.  The Judge had made it clear that, due to Gabe's heart condition, she would never return him if she is still smoking.

Because of all this, the case worker has reduced visitation to only once a week!!!

I am SO excited about this.

Not only does that free up a day that we used to have to be glued to the house for, it is also a great indicator of where they think this case is going.

The case worker told me that the case just isn't making any progress and it doesn't look good for birth mom getting rights back.

We were told at court that Gabe would be getting a CASA worker (an advocate that would speak in court solely on what is in Gabe's best interest) but the case worker feels that isn't going to be necessary after these new developments.

For the first time since Gabe came home to us, I feel like we are on the upswing.

We go to court the 1st or 2nd week of May for the year end review and hopefully we can wrap this thing up!

A New Stage

2009 178

This past week, we have entered a new stage.

Several times I've glanced around looking for Josie and found her at the back table coloring, feeding her babies, or looking at a book.

The first time I saw her I pulled up a bar stool and just watched her for 10 minutes.

She was so content. So peaceful.

I had just been talking to Andrew's Aunt about how I didn't know how to teach her to play by herself. She is constantly saying, "Watch me Mommy." She's scared to play in the toy room by herself. And with no siblings on the visable horizon, I knew she needed to learn to entertain herself.

She must have overheard me, and like so many other things in her life, she took the lead.

I'm so pleased at what a good girl she is. She makes Andrew and I so very proud.

And as happy as I am to see her playing by herself, it's just another reminder that she is growing up. Another hint towards the inevitable.

I'm raising her to leave me.

Which is pretty much the mark of successful parenting. A child growing up to be an independant person.

But that's a little heavy for a Friday morning. So rather then thinking about her growing up too fast, I think I'll pull up a bar stool and watch my baby color.

Them Pearly Whites

aaa

Josie had her first dentist appointment on Tuesday and we are happy to report that she is cavity free!

The dentist was very impressed with her brushing. Which made me happy since I still do it for her.

I was expecting major tears but she did awesome. I thought I'd be able to go back with her but they encourage parents to have the child go alone so we tried that and it worked.

Before we left we got to see her xrays and I could see her big teeth. Let's just say I sure do hope her mouth does some growing or we are going to need some serious braces!

I was so proud of her for being such a big girl. We celebrated with lots of sugary frosted brownies!

My Doctor Might Be A Quack

So after Kameron questioned Josie being in the 70th Percentile for her weight, I pulled up the calculator an ran the numbers again.

Honestly, I almost laughed when the doctor said it. Turns out I should have questioned it.

According to the online calculator, she's barely in the 3rd Percentile for weight and the 4th for her height.

Hmmm, maybe she needs to check her computer.

Either way, she is growing and I guess that's all that matters.

So Much For Global Warming

I have to admit, I had to bite my tounge yesterday after teasing everyone for thinking it was going to snow.

It did.

And more then the usual "Snow Blankets The South (even though you can still see grass)" kind of snow, but actual snow.

s7

It started around 1 with tiny tiny flakes. We were at the Waffle House and everyone was losing their minds.

s5

By the time we got home, it was starting to come down faster.

And it was perfectly sticky snow.

s3

And by the time nap was over, we had a couple inches.

s1

It didn't stop us from heading out for pizza to celebrate Josie one more time.

I am a seasoned Northerner after all!

s8

Today, everything is covered in snow and it is beautiful.

And as long as the Weatherman is right and the temps keep climbing, I'm OK with one day of snow.

Any more then that and we're packing up and heading South.

s9

Josie had her 3 Year Checkup yesterday morning.

I was so sure the doctor was going to be concerned with her weight, but she is actually in the 70th percentile for weight (at 25.4 pounds). She's a bit short, but nothing way out of line (just under 3 feet).

She had an eye test that she rocked and when the doctor asked what her favorite food was she responded with, "Carrots."

I was one proud Mama.

Tuesday we have her first dentist appointment, which I'm sure will be an ordeal.

Well, my little Southern Belle is dying to get out in the snow so I suppose I'd better find a parka and head out!

2009 231

This was a big year for our Josie.

She ditched the paci, potty trained herself, and moved on up to a big girl bed.

She went from wanting to be our baby and have us "feed" her a bottle, to strongly protesting any association with the word "baby."

She added about 5000 words to her vocabulary (at least it seems like it!) and went to her first dance class.

She had a temporary sister (Karmen) for two weeks and went on five vacations.

She started the year spending most her time in daycare and ended it spending 24 hours a day with her Mama.

And as you can see from the pictures, she lost the last of her baby fat and somewhere along the last 12 months, she decided to start looking like a little girl.

I can't believe all the changes she's made this year.

And I really can't believe that she will be 3 in a month and a half.

Don't tell her, but I'm still calling her my baby in 2010!

Visions Of Sugerplums

I had every intention of not having Josie sleep in her new Big Girl Room until it was 100% complete.

But once the paint was up, she claimed the space as hers.

Today we decided to do a trial run of sleeping in the big bed at naptime.

I was all prepped for a long haul of back and forths, but my sweet Josie Kat laid down and whispered, "Nite Mommy, Love you."

No long list of songs, no repeat requests for water. Nada.

I don't want to jinx it, but when I went in to check on her five minutes later this is what I saw:

My Sweetpea is growing up.

I had to snap a picture. It feels like I'm running out of "firsts" to capture.

I will have a full post on her room soon.

It is now my favorite room in the house.

I loved her nursery, but it was generic since it was done before she even arrived. I've had so much fun hand picking things that define her personality this go round.

Sleep well Little Boo.

Josie Gets Her Hair Did

minnesotatrip 004
Josie's bouncy curls were losing their bounce and combing through her luscious locks was getting to be pretty much impossible.
So after two months of preparation, yesterday we went and had her first salon experience!
I was SO SO happy that my own personal stylist, my beautiful cousin Pearl, was able to fit one extra head of curls into her schedule!

So in to the chair she went.
