Book Worm

I don't know what has come over me these past couple months, but I can't stop reading!

It all started in February with "Pillars of the Earth."
My mom bought me this book 2 years ago for Christmas. I started it and loved it, but was so busy with work and, well let's be honest, TV, that I never got much past the 100th page.
And this book has a whole lotta pages!
A few weeks before I quit my job, we canceled the ole TV.
And I was bored!
So I found this bad boy in my closet and started reading it. And I couldn't put it down!
It is a great story that totally captured my attention. It was one of those books where you really want to know what happens to all the characters next.
Good book selection Oprah.
I finished it when we were in Arizona. Thank God, because that book is huge and heavy and it really sucked lugging it around the airport.
I felt lost without something to read.
Enter my awesome, book club going, Momma Pants.
She let me borrow, "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan."
I was a little weary of the name. It sounded cheesy.
And a couple chapers in, when they discribed foot binding in detail, I almost lost my cookies and gave up.
But I stuck it out and it turned out to be an awesome book.
It's the story of a girl and her arranged best friend. It gave a lot of insight to their culture and how differently children are raised throughout the World.
Made me love my bestie even more.
And made me really glad that my mom wasn't obsessed with making my feet tiny.I was back in Atlanta when I finished that puppy dog.
I was jonesing for another book, but $25.00 for a newby that I would only read once made my heart sad.
Then I woke up one morning with a great revelation.
Wouldn't it be nice if there was a big place where they stored every book ever written and they let people take them home for a period of time to read and then bring back? It would be super great if they let you do that for free!
I was so excited about my idea until I discovered that place already exsisted. They call it the "library."
I was a little intimidated to go since I was fairly certain that I had checked out a few books back in college and then failed to return them.
I wasn't sure if that was illegal or not.
I even thought about getting the card in Josie's name.
Turns out it wasn't an issue, no fines for this chica.
My first pic was "My Sister's Keeper" and it was a-w-e-s-o-m-e.
It's about a girl who is genetically conceived (through in-vetro) to be an exact match for her sister who has lukemia and needs bone marrow and all kinds of other surgeries that require a perfect match.
It brings up all sorts of questions about morality and genetic testing.
This was anther one where I wanted so bad for there to be a sequel.Since I liked Jodi Picoult's writing style so much, I decided to read all the books by her that our little library has.
So I picked out "Vanishing Acts" next.
This one was really good too. It's about a woman who thinks her mother died when she was a baby, but finds out (in the beginning so I'm not ruining anything for you!) that her dad had actually kidnapped her away from her mother during a parent visitation.
UGHH! Wouldn't that be AWFUL!?!?!
The cops finally catch up with them when the woman is in her 20's and the dad has to go on trial.
The story gets so great from there. For some reason or another, I wasn't able to go to the library the second I was done with that one so I rummaged through my closet and found another book my Mom had lent me.
"Barefoot" is a lighter story and an "easy read" (that's what they call it right?)
It's about a woman, her sister, and her sister's best friend. The first woman is dying of cancer and wants to spend the summer in the beach house they grew up in. The sister goes with to take care of her and brings along her best friend who is going through a divorce.
There are love affairs, death, and friendship.
What's that? Another book my Mom insisted I read?
"Water for Elephants" made me laugh at the name.
Seriously Mom? A book about a dude who joins the circus?
Well, she was right! It was so good.
It's hard to describe it, but it's about a college kid whose parents die and he runs off and joins the circus.
It jumps between the guy being an old man to him remembering all the things that happened while he was with the circus.
And I know when we take Josie to the circus this Fall, I won't look at it the same way! Then I went back to the faithful Mrs. Picoult.
"Handle With Care" is about a little girl with brittle bones disease. Her bones break from any little bump.
The story is about how that effects the whole family and how the mother is obsessed with the little girl.
After a bad fall at Disney World, the parents try to sue Disney and wind up with the idea to sue their OB-GYN for not discovering the disease in utero, thus taking the option to terminate the pregnancy away from the parents.
The OB-GYN is the mother's best friend.
You following me?
It was a great book, but the ending disappointed me.
I hate a rushed ending. Finally, just a couple days ago, I finished "The Mermaid Chair."
I loved "The Secret Lives of Bees" and this one is by the same lady, but it was a lot harder to get into.
I did end up liking it, but not as much as the other books I'd been reading.Josie and I went on a book run yesterday and I picked up, "This Side of Heaven" and "Salem Falls".
I'm also reading, "Everyday Deserves a Chance" as a nightly devotional and "Boundries With Kids" to make me a less smoothering Momma!
So far I've been finishing a book every 4 or 5 days, depending on how good it is and how much sleep I need to get, then taking a couple days off before starting another one.

All this to say, I am SO glad that we canceled our TV.
We actually hooked it back up a couple months ago and them unhooked it within 24 hours when I couldn't stand to just sit and be totally unproductive.
Especially when I was being charged $75 a month to be unproductive.
I love that Andrew and I have in depth talks about what's happening in our life and our family and I love reading!I am going to start reveiwing the books I read in case any of you are interested in finding a good book.
And if you know of any, let me know!

Ya know, we cancelled our TV too. $80 a month? And for what? So we turned it off.

Our marriage has never been stronger. :) We just talk more now and it's really nice.

Hi Nicole,
I found your blog through my friend's Adoption blog (she and her husband just adopted a beautiful little boy). I, too, love to read and LOVE your book reviews! I'm going to check out each of these books. Right now I'm in the middle of Picoult's "Songs of the Humpback Whale"...so far it's a good one. Keep the book reviews and suggestions coming!

I'm currently reading vanashing acts by Jodi P..I LOVE her books! BUT I would reccommend reading them in order...only because this one lawyer in the books "jordan Mcaffe" they kind of tell his story throughout her books...so if you read them out of order (like I did) you get a little confused. If you go on her website she has them all in order by the year she wrote them. The Pact is one of my favorite books by her!!

I read My Sisters Keeper a couple of years ago and it is one of my all time favorites. It makes you think about what would I do in that situation. I recommend it to everyone. Another good Jodi Picoult book is Plain Truth. I have a copy I can bring you. I started Keeping Faith but couldn't get into it. Another good one that I liked was The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

I just finished Barefoot last week. It put me in the mood for the beach. I got it from the bookstore in Zebulon for $3. I just started Fortune's Rocks by Anita Sherve.

I started Pillars of the Earth awhile back. I might need to pick it up again.
