Homemade Butter

The kids are learning about the food groups this month.

We have covered fruits and veggies and, this past week, moved on to dairy.  I found an old school Reading Rainbow episode on dairy cows that got Josie wondering how so many dairy products come from milk.

I knew it was super easy to make butter, so we gave it a try.

I poured heavy whipping cream into mason jars and had them shake, shake, shake!

It's October, you can expect to see Josie in a costume from here on out.

Wanna guess who ended up doing most of the shaking?

After a few minutes, we could tell the consistency was changing.  It took about 15 minutes of shaking for the buttermilk to separate and our butter to be ready.

Our finished butter!

Tested and approved by Gabe.

But he eats everything and anything.

The kids loved this activity.

I ended up adding garlic salt to Gabe's small container and making garlic bread with it.  Super yummy! Josie's ended up cinnamon sugar butter that we enjoyed on toast the next morning.
