Hewitt Homeschooling - TOS Review

I love Unit Studies.

I've dabbled with other methods of homeschooling and love a lot of their philosophies, but I always come back to units.  I want Josie and Gabe to spend their early school days diving into topics that interest them.

I was so excited reading Hewitt Homeschooling info page (which you can read by clicking HERE).  It seriously encompassed everything I believe about homeschooling.  It was so encouraging to see what I believe written out so to the point.   As for early education, they state that they believe in using great literature, combined with a good foundation in math and language, and lots of hands on experience.  Pretty much what Pope Academy is all about!

We were sent The Joy of Discovery.  This binder contains both The Joy of Discovery and the Learning Objectives for K-8th grade.  The books offer easy to follow direction and guidelines for using your child's own interests to develop unit studies.

I really enjoyed reading this manual and it got me thinking about units in a way I hadn't before.  It showed me that literally every subject can be taught through a unit focusing on one subject.  It also spoke a lot on how one unit can lead to another unit and another and another.  The World is a huge classroom once you start looking for the lessons!

My favorite part of The Joy of Discovery was the Learning Objectives.  As a new homeschooling mom, I often wonder if we are on target for all the different subjects.  This resource listed every milestone by grade level and I was able to go through and check off the ones Josie has reached and see what we needed to work on.  It was exciting to check the boxes knowing that she really is ahead of schedule in nearly every subject!

If you are interested in Unit Studies, this is a great book for you to read.

The Joy of Discovery and Learning Objectives retails for $21.00, but is currently on sale for $10.50.  That's a great price for this much information.

Hi

I've just become a reader of your blog. You have a beautiful family.
I haven't read everything about where you are now but how did you decide to homeschool the kids? Did you decide before the your adoption that you wouldn't work and as a family would homeschool? Just curious as my husband and I start planning and deciding what's best for us.

Have a great summer!
