I've never been a fan of gym class.
It was the main source of embarrassment for me in middle school. I still have nightmares about trying to climb that dang rope. Twenty years later, I still don't like working out.
I'm not at all worried about whether or not Josie is getting enough physical activity. She does ballet once a week and we swim a lot. In the Winter she will play soccer and there's always a lot of hoola hooping and bike riding going on.
I don't think we need an actual gym class type lesson, but when were asked to try out a subscription to Family Time Fitness, I figured it couldn't hurt. After all, Josie has endless energy and I'm up for trying anything that has the potential to wear her out.
But there's no way I'm letting her end up with the same negative memories of gym class. If we are going to do it, it has to be fun!
Family Time Fitness is a company focused on getting kids to exercise, preventing childhood obesity, and helping home schools develop a love for physical fitness.
The Fitness for Homeschool program consists of 260 well planned lessons designed to get your kids moving. You do not need to have any previous fitness knowledge to teach these lessons (thank goodness!). I would read over the lesson the night before we had our class and then just print out the one page summary to take outside while we did the class.
All of the activities can be done by a wide range of ages which allows for homeschooling families to do them together. Even a one student home like ours can get a lot out of the lessons.
The supplies that you will need are mostly things you probably have around the house already. We didn't have a few things, but it was very easy to substitute something else for those activities.
The program is designed to be used everyday. We have a lot of other lessons going on outside of the home right now so we are using it two days a week. Just another great thing about the program!
Here is Josie having a blast playing "Jump The River."
Girlfriend has some long jump skills.
Even Gabe got in on the action.
Overall I think this is a neat program.
We are having a good time using it and it does help to get some gross motor skills in. I personally think that I have two very active children and don't think we will continue to incorporate a gym class in our daily lessons. Most of these activities are ones that you could make up yourself. It was nice to have them written out for me and I know that we will be pulling these fun games out during the Winter when we are stuck inside.
You can purchase Family Time Fitness for $57.
There are also workbooks and other activities you can purchase from their site to supplement your fitness lessons. Check out Family Time Fitness for more details.
