I've never been a real Girly Girl.
I am usually a few months behind any fashion trends and I spent the majority of my adolescence trying to find ways to not do my hair.
I sported an awful perm for years and never once put any product in it. In fact, I'm pretty sure I brushed it out resulting in a pretty impressive fro for a french girl from Minnesota.
So I find it humorous that God gave me children that require massive hair care.
Most mornings, this is what greets me:
Tangled, snarly, and about 3 inches off the top of her head.
Her hair isn't super dry. It's actually a lot like mine in texture. The only major difference being the super tight curls.
Case in point:
We've tried a lot of different products and I think we have finally landed on a pretty good combo.
Here's what we are using:
First off, I found out I was washing her hair way to much and with the wrong kind of shampoo. Since then we've backed down to every few nights and switched to sulfate free shampoo called Creme de la Curl made by Miss Jessie's. It doesn't lather, which is strange, but it smells awesome and works great.
I use a bunch of different kinds of conditioners. My favorites are the Olive Oil conditioner that you can buy pretty much anywhere and Creme of Nature.
After her bath, and on days that we are staying home, she gets either a tight french braid or, her personal favorite, "antennas".
This change alone has saved me countless tears (hers and mine) with combing it out in the mornings.
And these are her products.
Which makes me laugh. I seriously have a bottle of hair spray that I've had for 2 years under the counter. That's it.
We spray it down with water, cover it with detangler, and comb it out. Then I saturate it with Motions Leave-In Conditioner.
Once all that's in, she gets either the Just for Me Curl Smoother Creme or Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. The Miss Jessies product is pretty expensive for a 5 year old so we only use that if I really want her curls to hold up.
So there you have it! My 5 year old's hair products.
How about you? Do you have any high maintenance hair in your house?
Sister has more hair products than me! I had to laugh about you having a two year old hairspray under the cabinet. Last year, I finally finished off the can that I bought to use at our wedding...five years ago!
ReplyDeleteLove this post! While T no longer has her curls, it's still long and snarly more often than not. I tease her that the knot monster comes to visit her every night! I spend more on the girls' products than mine. I make sure their shampoos have no added crud that could be "dangerous". My life savers so far: Knot Genie brush and Original Sprout Miracle Detangler.
ReplyDeleteHow I love that little curly top!!!!! And thank you for not adding into this post that her MaeMae once used a product on her little head that was not intended for use on that end of the body!
ReplyDeleteI have a son with extremely tight curls, but I LOVE his curls so I will not shave his head. We use Kinky Curly products and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! I wash his hair every 1 to 2 weeks. Each morning I wet his hair add Knot Today Moisturizer and then the Curling Custard for all day precious curls.
ReplyDeleteI used to have a counter in my bathroom like yours, but since I switched to Kinky Curly products I only need these three.
I could've written this post! It is ironic. Emma and I used to take a comb and a hairband now we travel with a carry on size hair bag! Trying to use up some of our stuff so I can try some of this new stuff. I need a good conditioner for Audg. I still love the kindy curly custard. Hope you are having a great vacation!
ReplyDeleteIt's so funny how many countless products we have to go through to find the perfect one! I could open my own beauty supply store! The "perfect" one for my two kiddies are by a line called Curly Q's. We swear by the Culy Q Coconut Dream Moisturizing Conditioner (it smells soo yummy!) Then I use the Curly Q Gel-les'c ( pronounced jealousy) to not necessarily hold the curls in place, but to define them. Sometimes I use the Moist Curls Moisturizer Detangler on day 2 for my daughter.
ReplyDeleteSorry this turned into a product review but I just had to share a great product that works for us!
