Trying to find the words...

I've been formulating this post in my head since Tuesday night. I think I've rewritten it ten times and each time I get more frustrated.
So rather then not posting at all, I will just write from my heart and let you take from it what you will.

If you've been following my blog for any amount of time you know that I am a huge advocate for foster care and foster care adoptions.
Of course I wish that all parents understood the value of a child and treated their children the way they deserve to be treated, you know food, clothes, love.
But the reality of our World is that parents don't always do what's best for their children. Kids are neglected, abandoned, abused, forsaken, everyday.
And that's when foster care steps in.
In my mind, it's a caseworkers job to advocate for the child. To speak for those without a voice, to protect the most innocent of the victims.

Andrew and I attended our counties Foster Parent Association meeting on Tuesday.
It was basically a meeting to let the foster parents ask any questions or bring up any concerns that they had in a group setting. I'm sure to keep the case workers from having to answer the same questions over and over.
Our main question was why there had been a complete drop off in placement calls in the past few months.
Until last September, we had been receiving at least one call a month. But since then we have not heard a word from DFCS which is surprising considering the economy, especially in our county. I would have assumed an increase in neglect or unfit living conditions resulting in more placements.

I am still, 2 days later, in complete shock about the answer that the case worker gave.

And I quote, "Due to the recent budget cuts the department is facing, we won't be bringing kids into care if they just have a couple bruises. You know what I'm saying?"

Ummm, no Ma'am, I'm pretty sure I do not know what you are saying. Is it not your job to care for the kids? A couple bruises are OK now?
Our county took NO children into care in the past 3 months. I would be rejoicing that parents are finally taking care of their kids if that was the case, but it isn't.
What the hell is wrong with our country when we are spending millions of dollars on road construction while telling a child with two black eyes that there just isn't enough money for us to protect them?!?!
This is a statewide budget cut for foster care.
My heart literally hurts when I consider the number of kids that are being left in harmful, emotional or physical, situations so that we can get tax cuts.
I am not a fan of Welfare or redistribution of wealth. I don't like most of the programs that the government has to help the poor. I'm sure some of them are actually benefiting people who honestly need the help, but I know far too many situations where pure laziness is rewarded.
But even though I do not support many Welfare programs, I fully believe that it is our responsibility to protect children.
For Heaven's sake, they are children.

Andrew used to work for an organization that did trainings for foster parents.
On the way home from the meeting he told me he remembered this happening about 10 years ago. Budget cut backs forced DFCS to limit the number of kids that were brought into care.
That summer, four children who were referred to DFCS for abuse but were not taken into care due to budget cuts were killed by their birth parents.
Only then did the State cry out for reform for the foster care system.

This is Terrell Peterson.
He was 5 years old when he was beat to death by people in his own family.
DFCS had been notified numerous times about his abuse but he was left, forgotten, let down once again by people who were supposed to protect him.
His horrific beating that resulted in his death was the one that finally caught every one's attention.
His death was only 10 years ago.My, how quickly we have forgotten little Terrell.

Lord, please put your covering over the innocent children that are the true victims of these "budget cuts." I pray that you would rally your people in a miraculous way, ignite a flame of passion to protect these children. Send us to be your hands and feet. Only you can save them now.

Baby Fever

And I've got it bad!
How could I not when I got to hold this little peanut on Friday night?!?Little Miss Keelin! So sweet, so pretty, so perfect!
With those cubby cheeks and pigtails that look like antennae!I think it's crazy how much she looks like her Daddy! Just another way God works sometimes! She slept most of the time we were there. That's when I get the worst case of Baby Fever! I need them to cry and poop so that I remember that it's not always soft baby breath and clean onsies! There she is! Sweet thing.
And did I mention that she has Jeremy totally wrapped around her finger already!?!And where was my child while I was soaking in all of Keelin's 4 month old goodness?Trying to makeout with the dog, of course!
I guess I better get better at watching the one I have before I add another one!

Not Me! Monday

With only 10 days left until I am Josie's full time assistant, you better believe I have my fair share of Not Me!'s to shell out on MckMama's Bloggy Carnival!

  • I like to eat healthy. So I know it wasn't me who ate my weight in Buffalo Chicken Dip. If I had discovered and then fell in love with such a dip, it would have been fat free, not made out of many ingredients with the word "cream" in them!
  • And I would have only ate it at the baby shower. No way, no how did you smell it on my breath 3 days after the party was over. (don't worry, it is now extinct.)
  • I did not get allow Andrew to sign on to my Facebook so that he could see some pictures only to find him two hours later with not only his own Facebook all set up, but A BLOG too! Oh Lord! How are we ever going to share a computer!?!?
  • I am going to love the down time I'm about to have with Josie. So I did not spend the majority of the past week researching fun and free things to do to keep us busy.
  • I most definatly did not post a picture of POOP on my blog! Gross!
  • Andrew and I hadn't been back to our Home Church in almost a year! Lately we felt God was calling us back there and this Sunday, Josie and I finally went (Andrew had to work). I wasn't at all nervous. And I surely didn't change Josie's clothes 10 times before just putting her in some jeans and a t-shirt!
  • I didn't feel like the World's Worst Mother as I peeled my child off of me and left her screaming in a room full of people and kids she didn't know at all. Man that kid knows how to play the ole heart strings!
  • We didn't end up staying for almost 2 hours! And the play that our old youth group (the one Andrew and I started, it was pretty much our first baby!) wasn't magnificent!
  • We still have 2 full weeks before we board our plane to Arizona where we will spend 16 glorious, family filled, romantic date filled, free babysitting, card playing, food eating, days. So those three stuffed suitcases sitting in the guest room, not ours. I would never pack that far in advance!
  • Josie has not been yelling, "MY PARTY" every morning first thing when she wakes up! I think she has about the same amount of patience as me!

Potty Training 101 (Semi-Disgusting)

How do I potty train my child?
It's an age old question.
Every mother has dreaded the potty training stage. And with good reason.
There is nothing flattering about your child wetting their pants at Target.
We decided to wait until after vacation to even think about potty training. My sister waited to potty train my nephew until he started asking about it and I planned to follow suit.
However, Miss Independant is turning out to be a potty prodigy.
She asks to sit on the potty all the time, but just sits there and then wants to flush. Rehersal as we call it.
But tonight she was ready for the real thing.
Josie went "number 2" on her potty without any prompting from us! I am so excited!
I would have been even more excited if she had waited 5 extra minutes until I got home, but hey, when you gotta go, you gotta go!
While I'm sure we still have a long road of potty training ahead of us, the fact that she told Andrew she had to go and then went is pretty impressive.
Makes up for the fact that she can't count past 2.

I apologize for the crudeness of the following images, but I am one proud Mama! And look how proud she is.
Yup, she's defiantly her father's daughter.

My Very Own Romeo

I am not married to the most romantic guy in the World.
He doesn't send me roses or write me poems with eloquent words (but he did propose by writing me a song and having a full band play it while he sang slightly off key in front of 200 people!).
That's why finding little things like this... makes my heart melt.
And I know it was him and not my exceptionally brilliant daughter that did it because it was up way to high for her to reach.
Unfortunately, I didn't find it until I had already started pouting around the house and complaining that dinner wasn't ready yet.
Opps.
Yes, my man loves me.
After we finally ate and put JK to bed, we watched "Defiantly, Maybe".
I'm not usually into romantic comedies due to the cheese factor, but this one was good.
Made me happy that I married my love dove.
Then, as we were saying goodnight, he leaned in to give me a sweet, romantic kiss and then...
He sneezed on me. Right in my face. Sneeze Juice and all.
And he's back!

It's A Girl!!!

And she's 100% ours!
Josie's birth certificate FINALLY came last night and I finally let out a huge sigh of relief.

See that right there?
Mother's Name - NICOLE MARIE POPE
Father's Name - ANDREW NATHANIEL POPE
And then, of course, there's her name. Proof that calling her "Josie" isn't just a nickname anymore but her full fledged, legal name.
Sure I knew she was ours forever the day T placed her in my arms. And if there was any twinge of doubt after that, when the judge scribbled his name on the Adoption Decree, it was set in stone.
But there is something about seeing my name listed as "Mother" that really makes it real.
I am not an emotional person (except for when I break down and bawl at work!).

I didn't cry the day Josie came home.

I was solid as a rock the day she became a Pope.

However, last night after I tucked my angel in her bed, I cried the most thankful tears that have ever come out of my eyes.
She is my baby. And she is perfectly made for us.
THANK YOU GOD!

Seeing her birth certificate made me feel all sentimental inside so I took out her entire case file and read it from cover to cover.
All the details of her birth mothers tragic story, I wondered about the 2 sisters and 1 brother that she has out there, I read every doctors note from the time her first foster family had to take her to the hospital. I scrutinized every piece of information on her original birth certificate.
The only incorrect detail on her new one is that it says she was born at the hospital, but she was born in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Josie was born at 2:44 PM on February 11, 2007. She was tiny, weighing in at 4 pounds 12 ounces. And she had tiny little girl feet.

Ahhh, the peace of knowing she can never not be mine.

All the World is right.

"For this child I have prayed and the Lord has answered my petition." - 1 Samuel 1:27

Not Me Monday!

And now, for your reading pleasure, a completely stressed out Not Me Monday. Where I only talk about one thing and how it has made me a nut for the past week.

There is no humanly possiblity that it was me who started crying at work (one of my biggest no nos!) when a co-worker got snippy with me. That would be so unprofessional and would suggest that I am under more then my fair share of stress. Prozac anyone?

If I had such a moment of weakness, I for sure wouldn't have whipped up a master plan on how I could use that episode as a lead in to me putting in my two week notice. (Which is going down this Friday! Yikes!)

It surely hasn't been me who worried about "the Talk" so much all weekend that Andrew insisted that I go ahead and tell my boss on Monday just so I didn't give myself a heart attack about the whole thing.

When the moment of truth came and I uttered the words to my boss, it wasn't me who was so shocked at how well it went. My boss was so sweet and so genuinely sad that I was leaving that I didn't start to second guess weither I was making the right choice by leaving!

AHHHHH!!!!! I can't wait until next week's Not Me Monday. It will mean that a whole week is between me and this stressful situation!

Cowgirl

A cowgirl's gotta eat, right?!?

A Shower For Matalie!

We had Amy's baby shower on Saturday and it was a huge success!
Amy came down with a cold the day before the shower but she was able to suck it up long enough to have a good time!
I love this Baby Mama!
I had called Sheena (our good friend who owns a catering company called The Grand Gourmet) a week before the shower to coordinate who was bringing what and when I mentioned I didn't have the linens for the table yet she gladly said she'd take care of it.
I was expecting a pink table cloth.
I should have known that Sheena would create the most beautiful table scape I've ever seen!
Wow!

A bunch of our friends and family pitched in and made a dip or two. We ended up with the perfect amount of food that was all really delicious!
And just because Sheena did such an amazing job, here are a thousand pictures of the table and the food!I think the food was this preggo's favorite part! (I can't lie, it was my favorite part too!)My yummy yummy punch! That was gone pretty much right away! Opps!Want my top secret yummy yummy super special punch recipe? It's been in the family for years and is always a big hit....
Mix one bottle Sprite with one carton Raspberry Sherbet.
Pretty fancy, huh?
I use different flavors of sherbet to make it match the color scheme of the party, but the raspberry has been the crowd favorite.Tiffany, Amers, Me, and Sheena!Ean was also a crowd favorite! Amy's mom made the most amazing Buffalo Chicken Dip!What's a baby shower without a few sweet little girls?!?Glad the Chocolate Covered Pretzel Sticks were entertaining!I'm not sure if this is a good idea!! Are you OK Gigi!?!
And then, after a ton of fun girl talk and catching up with old friends, it was present time!I was put on Handing Amy The Gifts Duty, but I was so distracted by the sweet little newborn sized goodness that I didn't do a very good job!Amy's grandmother made her two homemade blankets!Present Unwrapper!I still don't believe her feet are that small!I was really happy with how it all came together.
Now all we need is Matalie!
